The Cape of Good Hope or better known these days as the Cape Peninsula is among the world’s top tourist destinations, the Peninsula is bisected by Table mountain national park. The park covers over 25 000 square km of the Cape Peninsula, including 1000 km of seas and coastline . Stretching almost continuously from Signal Hill in the north to Cape Point in the south, the area is probably unrivaled for endemic vegetation species per square km in the world, which lends itself to a fascinating and diverse bird life. The park provides birders with  easy access to a good selection of great birding habitats including but not limited to mountain fynbos, estuarine mudflats and floodplains , coastal rocks and beaches and coastal fynbos and strandveld vegetation. Orange-breasted Sunbird, Bronze mannikinc Cape Sugarbird, Cape Spurfowl, Lemon Dove, Southern Boubou, Spotted Eagle-Owl, Cape Canary, Forest Canary, Cape Robin-Chat, Karoo Prinia, Swee Waxbil, Southern double collared sunbird and various raptors possible in the skies above Kirstenbosch.

Strandfontein and Rondevlei :

Cape Teal, Cape Shoveler, Maccoa Duck, South African Shelduck, and many others.  Greater Flamingo, African Spoonbill, Great White Pelican, African Oystercatcher, African Swamphen, Water, Spotted Thick-knees,  African Marsh Harrier,  Little Rush, African Reed, Lesser Swamp Warblers,  Malachite Kingfisher, African Snipe, and Blue billed Teal. We start the day  on a little coastal walk in the Mouille point area, searching the rocky shores for some cormorants , gulls, terns and oystercatchers . We then head to Intaka island, a secret little bird sanctuary in the metropolis that is Century city. Our next stop takes us to the world famous Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden , listing some great local endemics in the extensive gardens and lower slopes of Table mountain . We then venture on to the Strandfontein Bird sanctuary and stop at Rondevlei nature reserve on the way, which forms part of the False Bay nature reserve. We head out of Strandfontein water treatment plant and take a beautiful coastal drive past Muizenberg, checking the sandy shores for some shorebirds . Our day finishes around 4pm.
